Yahoo Site Explorer has been ended on 21st November 2011. According to yahoo search blog this data has been merged to Bing Webmaster Tools. Now Manage Custom Search Engine within Google Webmaster Tools

Recently Google has announced that you can now create and manage a Google-powered customized search engine from your Webmaster Tools account only. To do so you just need to click on “Custom Search” Link in Labs Section.

Google will automatically create a default CSE (custom search engine) that searches only in your site. You can get the code to add your new custom search engine to your site. You can make some basic configuration to the CSE or continue to the full control panel for more advance settings.

There are lots of advantages of CSEs like
  • CSEs can be customized like the look n feel of your site.
  • CSEs can improve the user experience with relevant results.

Google is planning to introduce +1 button for AdWords

Today I received an email from Google AdWords Team which was about +1 button integration to my AdWord ads. According to this email you can see a +1 button with your ads very soon. When someone searches on Google, (while signing in his Google Account) he will see a +1 button on your ad, user can click on +1 button to recommend your ad. Recommendations always play an important role in search results. Before AdWords, +1 button is already in use for organic search results & has impacted the search engine rankings as well. Now be ready to see the impact of +1 button on your ads, one possibility is that it may increase your Ad position.

What will be the exact impact of +1 button to ads? We will know once they will be in use.

You don’t need to do anything to use this +1 button for your ads, Google itself integrate +1 button for all AdWords Ads. On the other hand you can add this +1 button to your site, so that the visitors of your site have an opportunity to +1 your site.

Create New AdWords Accounts in MCC without Login & Password

Google has rolled out a new feature by which anyone can create new Google AdWords accounts within MCC (My Client Center) without a login and password.  This new optional-login accounts feature will allow users and firms to create AdWords accounts without creating a separate email address and password for the new account.

Google has also provided some tips on how to use this feature:

Creation of optional-login accounts in Google AdWords:
Click on the "Create Account" button within your MCC, then complete the three required fields: account name, time zone and currency. You’ll also see a collapsible link to “Invite another user (optional),” which provides the option to invite a user to the account. Even if you opt not to, once you click "Save", you'll have a new, live account.

If users want account to have a login:
You can either “Invite another user (optional)” during the account creation process or follow the normal process for inviting a user to an AdWords account: go to the “My Account” tab, click on “Account Access” and choose the link “Invite other users”.

Optional-login accounts notifications:
Red Alert Account Notifications (such as billing notifications or policy violations emails) will be sent to the email address associated with the MCC. For non-red alerts, make sure you’ve opted into notifications on the "My Client Settings" page at the MCC level. You also may opt into performance suggestions and newsletters specifically for the optional-login account. Such notifications will be sent to the email address associated with the MCC.

Instant Previews in Google Webmaster Tools

Google has launched instant previews in November, 2010 which shows a quick preview of the search results to user.

Sometimes instant previews look different from what users see on your websites. In this case Google is having some problem in crawling your site. These problems may contain:

  • Resources blocked using robots.txt file
  • Flawed content served to Googlebot
  • Bad alternate content for flash (if flash is not available)

Now Google has introduced a new Instant Previews Tool, using that all webmasters can diagnose their website problems and rectify them.

In Instant Preview Tool at Google Webmaster, webmasters can compare their site as they open in browser (like chrome) and its instant preview. Google recommends using alternative content for flash and silverlight because the webkit that generates both renders does not include plugins.

Upload Google Videos to YouTube

In my previous post “Say Bye to Google Videos” I have mentioned that Google Videos is no longer available to watch since April 29 but you can download your videos till May 13.

The downloaded videos can be uploaded to YouTube. Previously Google has not provided any way to directly migrate Google video to YouTube but now Google has provided an “Upload videos to YouTube” option by which you can directly transfer your Google Video to YouTube.

According to Google...

“We’ve created an “Upload Videos to YouTube” option on the Google Video status page. To do this, you’ll need to have a YouTube account associated with your Google Video account (you can create one here). Before doing this you should read YouTube’s Terms of Use and Copyright Policies. If you choose this option, we’ll do our best to ensure your existing Google Video links continue to function.”

If people also want to download their videos from Google Videos, the download option is still there.

Google Videos
Google Videos will no longer available to watch since April 29, 2011. Recently Google, the search giant has sent an email to all users who have uploaded one or more video to Google Videos.

Google is motivating all Google Videos users to upload their videos on YouTube. From April 29, 2011 you can no longer watch your video but you can download your video till May 13, 2011. 

Initially Google Videos was launched to answer YouTube on January 25, 2005, but in October 2006 Google has acquired YouTube for $1.65 billion.  On June 13, 2007 Google Videos search results has started showing videos indexed by their crawlers, YouTube and other hosting services.

Google Videos has stopped accepting new video uploads on May 2009. After that all videos are still available and works as search function. Now Google has decided to completely close the Google Videos by deleting all the existing videos. Even Google has not given any direct way to transfer their Video from Google Videos to YouTube, but they are encouraging all users to download their video from Google Video and upload them on YouTube.

"Dear Google Video User,

Later this month, hosted video content on Google Video will no longer be available for playback. Google Video stopped taking uploads in May 2009 and now we're removing the remaining hosted content. We've always maintained that the strength of Google Video is its ability to let people search videos from across the web, regardless of where those videos are hosted. And this move will enable us to focus on developing these technologies further to the benefit of searchers worldwide.

On April 29, 2011, videos that have been uploaded to Google Video will no longer be available for playback. We've added a Download button to the video status page, so you can download any video content you want to save. If you don't want to download your content, you don't need to do anything. (The Download feature will be disabled after May 13, 2011.)

We encourage you to move to your content to YouTube if you haven't done so already. YouTube offers many video hosting options including the ability to share your videos privately or in an unlisted manner. To learn more go here.

Here's how to download your videos:
  • Go to the Video Status page.
  • To download a video to your computer, click the Download Video link located on the right side of each of your videos in the Actions column.
Once a video has been downloaded, "Already Downloaded" will appear next to the Download Video link.

If you have many videos on Google Video, you may need to use the paging controls located on the bottom right of the page to access them all. Please note: This download option will be available through May 13, 2011."

Google Panda Update: An Algorithmic Change to Fight against Content Farms

In February 2011, Google has launched a big algorithmic change which will impact 11.8% queries. Google Says this algorithm will help in reducing rankings of various low quality websites, like sites which use copied content, low-quality content for users and duplicate content. These types of sites are not very useful to be ranked in higher positions. On the other hand various high quality websites which use original content, in-depth information and useful details from the user’s perspective will get better rankings.

This algo update will cause a major change in the rankings of many websites. Google also cleared that this update does not depend on the feedback they have received from Personal Blocklist Chrome extension, but they have compared that Blocklist Data with the sites identified by this algorithm.

In February, this algorithm update was launched for US only and now on April 12, 2011 this algorithmic improvement is launched globally to all English language sites.

Today we’ve rolled out this improvement globally to all English-language Google users, and we’ve also incorporated new user feedback signals to help people find better search results. In some high-confidence situations, we are beginning to incorporate data about the sites that users block into our algorithms. In addition, this change also goes deeper into the “long tail” of low-quality websites to return higher-quality results where the algorithm might not have been able to make an assessment before. The impact of these new signals is smaller in scope than the original change: about 2% of U.S. queries are affected by a reasonable amount, compared with almost 12% of U.S. queries for the original change.

Google has tested this algorithm and found it very accurate in finding quality sites. If your site has been affected by this update, then analyze various aspects of your site. You can review Google’s quality guidelines to get helpful information about improving your site’s quality.

Google has not provided the names of any websites which went down after the effect of this algorithmic change; Google’s main focus is content farms. Through this algorithm Google will focus on websites which are content farms that uses copied or duplicate content. So if your site is using any content farm, be focused otherwise your site will be go down.

According to Amit Singhal they internally call it "Panda" (name of an engineer among the key guys who made this update possible.) Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Land is calling it “Farmer” as this algo has targeted content farms.

Google Street View Photographs must have 100% Anonymity said Swiss Court

Recently Swiss Court demands 100% Anonymity in all Photographs of Google Street View. Swiss Court says that Google must blur all the faces and licenses in these photos, even if they have to blur them manually.

Swiss Federal Administrative Court has taken a decision on 4th April 2011 and this is one piece of them. Currently company’s automated blurring system blurs 98-99% of faces and licenses. Google has also argued that blurring by hand will be very expensive; also if many other countries followed the same rule.

After this verdict, Google’s global privacy counsel Mr. Peter Fleischer, Shared:

"We have received the court’s verdict and are currently assessing its implications. We are very disappointed because Street View has proved to be very useful to millions of people as well as businesses and tourist organisations. More than one in four of the Swiss population has used it since the service launched in Switzerland. We’ll now take some time to consider what this means for Street View in Switzerland and our appeal options."

This verdict has many other points which must be followed by Google. Formerly Google has faced many challenges and slow downs in other countries.

According to Webmaster Tools Central Blog, If you are a site owner and using same Google account for both Google Analytics & Google Webmaster Tools, then you can link your webmaster tool verified website to analytics profile for that website.

Now it is possible to access your analytics data through webmaster tools. You can directly access the referring sites report of your analytics profile through “Links to your site” page in webmaster tool.

Also you can easily access your analytics data without login to Google analytics account. You can simply access the analytics account from the navigation link on the top left of webmaster tools. In case of multiple website owners, each owner has to link its own webmaster profile to analytics account.

Google has launched a new home page design for AdWords account. Features like account alerts summary and account performance graph are remain same but you can customize this home page as per your requirement. You can choose various parts of your account that matters more for you.

Google has done this change on the basis of feedback received by various Google Advertisers. Different advertisers want different snapshot of their AdWord account home page to quickly view various aspects of their account.

Algorithm Change Launched: Google’s Fight with Spam Starts

Today the head of Google’s Webspam team, Matt Cutts has announced a new algorithm change for Google. It will help in detecting and reducing web spam from Google’s Search Results. All websites which have low original content or copied content will be affected by this change. They can see a major change in their site rankings in search results.

Cutts mentioned this algo change was approved at weekly quality launch meeting happened on last Thursday and launched this week.

Cutts has announced it on his blog and also posted it at Hacker News. According to his blog “slightly over 2% of queries change in some way, but less than half a percent of search results change enough that someone might really notice. The net effect is that searchers are more likely to see the sites that wrote the original content rather than a site that scraped or copied the original site’s content.”

Cutts said they have re-designed a new document-level classifier, which will easily detect spammy & repeated words. This is the start of Google’s fight towards increasing web spam.

On January 20, 2011 Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt has made an announcement through his post “An update from the Chairman” on Google’s Official Blog.

According to Eric “Larry will now lead product development and technology strategy, his greatest strengths, and starting from April 4 he will take charge of our day-to-day operations as Google’s Chief Executive Officer. In this new role I know he will merge Google’s technology and business vision brilliantly. I am enormously proud of my last decade as CEO, and I am certain that the next 10 years under Larry will be even better! Larry, in my clear opinion, is ready to lead.”

Eric Schmidt has joined Google in 2001, from last 10 years Google search has changed people’s life. Now, Eric will work as an advisor to Larry & Sergey. Apart from that Sergey will focus his time and efforts on strategic projects, basically new projects.

Let’s wish luck to Larry for new search improvements in future.

Google Shows Competitor Links For YouTube Videos

Google has started displaying links to various search engines and video sites in its search results. But these links will be displayed just for music-related searches.

Try searching “Green Day” in Google, you will see the three video results from YouTube. Each YouTube Video will now include additional links for that video on other sites on web; they can be video sites or search engines.

In the below example, you can see results for Metacafe, MySpace and Dailymotion.

On January 14, 2011 Google has announced about better video results for music related searches. According to Official Google Blog, Google scans entire video content on the web and then its algorithm ranks the better sources of each video. Google has grouped results of same song instead of repeated results.

So, now you can choose among various video sites to see your favorite song.

Google Maps User Interface Changes

Google is experimenting new changes for users in Google Maps. Google is continuously trying with new controls for navigation. Various Map features like white buttons for selecting maps or/and satellite view, drop down list for viewing buzz updates, photos and many other geo-taggable features will go away very soon. They will be replaced with stylish and graphical icons when you hover the mouse over them.

You can see many more features in “more” column. Every option from this “more” button includes some changes & new features added to Google Maps.

Recently, the Google Maps team has announced Google Hotpot activity integration into Google Maps. Google Hotpot is also available as iPhone Application. Maps has also introduced 45° imagery feature, which include high-resolution images of locations near United States. Google will also cover some social space more, as buzz is already integrated.

Google Hotpot is a local recommendation engine where you and your friends can discover, rate and review your favorite places.

On January 11, Google has made an announcement that Google Maps home page will now show the hotpot activities.

To see it, just login to your Google Account and visit Google Maps. You will see that the left panel which used to blank formerly; is now showing latest hotpot activities of your friends. It shows how effectively Google is utilizing this space in Google Maps Home Page.

Google Partners with Edgenet for High Quality Product Data

Google has taken an initiative to show high quality product data, it will help you for finding products offline in local stores. Google has also recently launched a new shopping website named You can browse more products with additional improvements in Google Product Search. There are also product listing ads which are open for US advertisers since last November.

In short, there are lot of improvements in Google Product Search and Product Advertising by Google. Now you can get more detailed data through Google’s Partnership with Edgenet.

Edgenet is a leading product content collection company to drive first time offering to manufacturers and suppliers. Edgenet has described its relationship with Google in following words…

Google Architecture Overview

In this post, I will tell you how the whole Google Search Engine system works.  You can see the complete Google functioning in below figure.

Google Architecture

This is a high level Google Architecture; several distributed crawlers are used for downloading web pages from the web. URLserver sends list of urls to the crawlers. Then crawler fetches the web pages and sends them to the storeserver. Then the storeserver compresses the fetched web pages and stores them in a repository. Each web page has a associated id number which is called docID. docID is assigned when any url is parsed from a web page. The indexer part reads the repository, uncompresses and parses the documents. The documents are converted into hits (i.e. set of word occurrences).  The indexer then distributes these hits into various set of barrels.

The indexer parses all the links in web pages and stores important information in an anchors file. The file contains all information regarding a link.

The URLresolver takes data from anchors file & convert relative urls into absolute urls, then turn them into docIDs. URLresolver also generates links database, which is used to calculate page rank of all documents.

The sorter takes barrelts data and resorts them by wordID and create an inverted index.

The sorter generates list of wordIDs and offsets into an inverted index. A program called DumpLexicon takes this list together with the lexicon produced by the indexer and generates a new lexicon to be used by the searcher. The searcher is run by a web server and uses the lexicon built by DumpLexicon together with the inverted index and the PageRanks to answer queries.
